Two chess pieces
Joãozinho da Costa
Flaviano and Quintino are two brothers who after the death of their father plunge into the underworld of crime and excessive drug consumption. The brothers have in common disbelief and deep sadness at the loss of their father figure. Flaviano who was arrested for robbery ends up meeting his brother again in jail, an encounter that lasts only a few minutes.
"Two Chess Pieces" tells the story of Quintino, a troubled boy who in jail is subjected to excessive doses of largactil that end up affecting his head, his sense of reality and his physical mobility.
The effect of the largactil injections arouse feelings of anger that Quintino can't control. From a series of situations that arise in jail, the play reveals the fears and deep sadness that lie behind the character's mind. The meeting with his brother is the key piece for Quintino to rediscover memories of the past that were once happy and to glimpse a future.
"Two Chess Pieces" is the first staging by Joãozinho da Costa, who was the protagonist of "The Mandjako Girl" by Rui Catalão, a play inspired by episodes from his life story.
